A status ailment effects a party member in all three games in the Mother series. Some ailments are realistic such as homesickness or asthma. There are only two trademark status aliments: Asthma, it is the status aliment that only Ninten receives, and Homesickness, which only Ness receives. The following is a list of other possible status ailments.
They can be categorized by types, As all status ailments do hinder the battle progress of both enemies and the player.
- Damage-Dealing Status ailments: Produces damage on a target per turn, even outside of battle.
- Stat-Decreasing Status ailments: Lowers the chances of a target from hitting, exclusively Crying.
- Restriction-Dealing Status ailments: Hinders action; some can be cured by a few turns, while others do not.
|Asleep||Prevents all action.||Caused by Hypnosis.|
|Asthma||Occasionally causes victim to miss turns during combat. Specific to EarthBound Beginnings, only Ninten can be affected by this.||Enemy attacks such as Mad Truck's exhaust fumes.||AsthmaSpray.|
|Blind||Increases chance to miss with physical attacks; equivalent to crying.||Enemy attacks.||None known.|
|Burning||Causes damage each turn.||Possible side effect of PSI Fire.||None known.|
|Confused||Victim may attack anyone during battle, including both allies and unintended enemy targets.||May be caused by Brainshock, BrainCyclone, Wicked seeds or Rockoyles.||Noble seeds.|
|Diamondized||Victim is transformed into a diamond statue and is unable to act in any way. Functions the same way as Unconscious, except that the hospital can't heal it(the blue-haired healer can).||Enemy attacks such as Trillionage Sprout's eerie stare.||CoL, HoL, SH, PSI Healing γ.|
|Disrupted Concentration||Prevents the use of PSI.||Enemy attacks such as Mad Duck's sense disruption.||Can't be cured. Lasts several turns.|
|Fleas||Occasionally prevents the victim from using special abilities such as PSI. Specific to Mother 3.||Comes from some animals.||Flea Powder.|
|Frozen||Prevents movement.||Possible side effect of PSI Freeze.||None known.|
|Homesick||Occasionally causes victim to waste a turn reminiscing about home. Specific to EarthBound, only Ness and the Mischievous Mole can be affected by this.||From not calling Ness' mother for a lengthy period of time.||Calling Ness' mother via telephone(being called via the Receiver Phone does not work), or talking to her. Temporarily cured by a chick(chicken does not work).|
|Mushroomized||Occasionally causes the victim to attack its allies. Also randomly changes movement controls while walking outside of battle.||Enemy attacks such as a Ramblin' Evil Mushroom's spores.||Can only be cured by a blue-haired healer, or the mushroom picking girl near a cave in Peacefull Rest Valley entrance, or in the hot springs of Saturn Valley.|
||Enemy attacks such as Master Belch's or Stinky Ghost's burps.||
|Numb/Paralyzed||Prevents movement. In Mother, this is equivalent to stone or unconscious; if all players are afflicted by one of these effects, the game is over.||Possible side effect of PSI Flash or PSI Thunder.||
|Poisoned||In Mother, Poison does damage only in the overworld, at about one HP every eight steps. Causes about 20 damage each turn in EarthBound, and about 5 in Mother 3.||From naturally poisonous enemies such as snakes and arachnids. Also from the PoisnNeedle item in Mother 1.|
|Possessed||A Tiny L'il Ghost follows the victim, which, on each turn, will either do an insignificant amount of damage or solidify someone. Specific to EarthBound.||Enemy attacks such as Zombie Possessor's icy hand.||Receiving an attack that damages the entire party(such as PSI Fire); the ghost itself can take damage.|
|PSI Block||Prevents the use of PSI. Specific to Mother; however, EarthBound has an equivalent ailment, disrupted concentration.||Can't be healed. Lasts until the battle ends.|
|Puzzled||Victim occasionally wastes turns daydreaming.||Caused by the attacks of Titanian, Woodoh, and Kelly.||Can't be healed. Lasts until the battle ends.|
|Solidified||Prevents movement, but not PSI.||Enemy attacks, such as Coil Snake's coil.||Can't be cured, but only lasts one turn.|
|Stone||Prevents all action. Equivalent to unconsciousness or paralysis; if all players are afflicted by one of these effects, the game is over. Specific to Mother.||StoneOrigin.||Healing γ.|
|Strangeness||Occasionally causes the victim to attack its allies.||Possible side effect of PSI Flash, certain effect of Brainshock.||
|Stuck||Equivalent to paralysis, also counts as unconscious. However, it will heal after a few turns. Specific to Mother.||Can't be cured. Lasts several turns.|
|Sunstroke||Causes 4 damage every turn.||From being in the desert for some period of time.||CoL, HoL, RH, SH, Wet Towel, PSI Healing.|
|Unconscious (Fainted)||Prevents all action. If all characters are in an unconscious state, the game is over.||From being reduced to 0 HP or from Mother's PK Fire Ω or PK Beam γ.||
|Uncontrollable crying||Greatly increases chance to miss with physical attacks(but not PSI).||Possible side effect of PSI Flash or various enemy attacks such as a Mad Taxi's exhaust fumes.||
