Experience points are used in all three games in the Mother series. The purpose that experience points serve is for leveling up. For example, when Ness gains enough Exp. Points, he can level up and learn things like PSI Rockin or Lifeup. Some PSI are not recognized by leveling up. Such as PSI Starstorm Alpha and Omega are learned through the ways of the Star Master or Ionia.
